1 month

9.02.2013

The past month has been full and it has been exciting. We managed to make it through the first two weeks when Wells' prime awake time was from 11PM to 1AM. Now, he has settled into a nightly routine of 9PM to 7 or 8AM, only waking to eat on cue. He made a few five and six hour sleeping stretches which we enjoyed. However, since I'm exclusively breastfeeding (no pump, no bottles... just boob) these long stretches were a bit too long for my breasts to handle. For two nights, per my lactation consultants advice, I woke him up every 3 or 4 hours to eat. After those two nights, I decided to go back to letting him organically wake up which has been consistently 11PM, 3AM, & 7AM (not too bad). Since then we've settled into a routine that has worked for the both of us. Maybe I'll get a pump sometime and he'll go back to sleeping through the night or my body will regulate its production soon. But, I'd rather our snuggle night feedings than waking up engorged with mastitis coming on.
Little bean is a chunk. Keeping us proud parents at his ped's visits (picture above is from his 2 week check up). At one month, Wells is 12.2 lb and 24 in. His rolls are scrumptious and I could kiss his cheeks for days. Each fold is just so cute. Bath time is one of our favorites. We love tending to all the creases. He absolutely loves it. After bath, we give a good coconut oil slather. Wells sometimes will mimic our faces. BIG face, small face. We even thought he chuckled the other day. He smiles all day long. This first month we've learned what it is like to have your heart outside of your body. He is our sunshine.
Lots of firsts this past month. First art museum: The Barnes Foundation. First restaurant: Talula's Daily. First flight: Philadelphia to Houston. First roadtrip: Houston to Lafayette. First movie: The Butler. First beach day: Galveston, Texas. First hotel stay: Galveston, Texas. We've enjoyed our days especially being able to visit my family in Louisiana. Ted went down to Galveston, Texas for work and we tagged along on his flights. We parted ways with Ted for a few days and went to Louisiana. It was divine. My mom gave me a full spa day and brought Wells to me for feedings. It was so relaxing. She also would come and take him early each morning so I could sleep in by myself. Heavenly. After a few days we parted ways over po-boys and beignets with my family (my grandma, grandpa, aunt, mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, and two nephews.) and headed back to Texas to meet Ted in Galveston.
My camera roll is filled with pictures of Wells sleeping on my grandparents couch. It's the same couch that I slept on as a fresh babe. (Where can I get a couch that holds its own for 25+ years?!) We crammed all our summer clothes into the short week we were down south. We even made it to the beach. No we didn't get in the water and yes Wells slept the entire time. I may have slept through it too being that it was a Texas beach. Wake me up when we are in Florida at the least, am I right.

Overall, this past month we've grown as a family. We've loved more than ever. We enjoyed Ted's four weeks off from work (first week I was in labor and in the hospital and 3 weeks at home as a family of three). We survived my mom heading back home after she was here for 3 weeks. We missed all the cakes she would make us. She was so helpful during her stay. Cleaning, babysitting, mothering, buying groceries and presents. We let steamy joyous tears flow mainly his first week as we were in awe of our little boy. Becoming parents has been natural. Especially Ted. I'm amazed at how he cares for Wells.
Happy One Month Wells. You brighten our world.
