A Homemade Christmas Present

2.08.2011
Two years ago, Ted and I decided we would make presents to exchange on Christmas. Since then, we've loved our homemade // heartfelt goodies. This year, Ted decided last minute that he'd record a rap song. The day before Christmas Eve, he and my little brother went over our dear friend Dave's house to record this.

They danced.. ..I smiled, laughed, and hoorayyed when I listened to it on Christmas Eve. Ted made it a video last night and I thought I'd post it. It's silly like he's not going to start pursuing a rap career but thoughtfully sweet.

edit :: I just realized the video was private... it's fixed now.

1.04.2011

A year ago today, we moved to Virginia from New Orleans. It was different (tons of old english people and swarmed with military) but we set out to make the best of our two and a half months there. We explored from Richmond to Norfolk. I passed the time working at a local hotspot coffee shop in Williamsburg and drank entirely too much coffee.

We soon found out that Virginia closes down when it snows. Ted standing in our backyard after we walked to the store to stock up on junk food. We spent a lot of time snuggling and watching movies.

March came around and it was busy. Ted graduated from A-school and we went back to New Orleans for a visit, flew to Dallas for Ted's mom's wedding, went back to New Orleans to unload our storage unit and headed to Philadelphia. It was my honor to stand with my sister-in-laws in Ted's mom's wedding. It was a beautiful ceremony and weekend. We helped my mother-in-law move into the house Donald had bought for them and it was wonderful sitting around their new house as a family. We will always treasure those precious moments we had.

April was a whirlwind. Finally, starting to unpack our boxes and get the loft set up in Philadelphia. Sadly, Ted's grandma passed away. We booked our flights to Denver and flew out the next day. I met a lot of my husband's extended family at the funeral and we had a wonderful time meeting our new nephew, Titus.

We took a small breather in May and enjoyed many evening picnics in the park a few blocks away. We fell in love with Philadelphia and living in the city. I enjoyed not working and cooking many weekly consistent meals. Our evening strolls around the city were my favorite.

Due to the oil spill, Ted volunteered for deployment to the Gulf. Luckily, he was stationed working out of New Orleans. I was able to meet him down there. We were able to meet our month old little nephew Abel. We celebrated our first anniversary in the city we were wed. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Disney anniversary plans due to Ted's deployment. Ended up enjoying a luxe suite in a fancy hotel and lavished ourselves with gifts. It's was perfect. Except for the tragic news of our new stepfather passing away unexpectedly.

I was able to celebrate with my bridesmaids for Jessica's birthday in July. We laughed over cheese and wine while we painted. I totally loved hanging out by the pool and taking it easy on my extended vacation to New Orleans. Half way through the month, Ted was sent back to Philly and I followed.

August rolled in and we took advantage of our close proximity to New York. We sat and talked in Central park, window shopped in Soho, and had that magical New York experience. We walked South Street often to visit our new friends at Art to Save the World which was working with me on helping raise money to send to help fishermen in the Bayou (due to the oil spill).

Here I am sitting at brunch with my family. You can see more pictures of my visit here. A visit to my family in Kentucky and a dear friend's wedding...along with starting a new part time job. (I realized how awesome I had it not working at all for months.) We found a church. Ted switch departments at work which changed his schedule allowing him to be home more often which I have loved since. I scored a part time gig watching a little munchkin and enjoyed my last few weeks off before I started working.

We flew my mother-in-love in for a visit in October. Since, Ted was deployed and we were unable to be there for her through the funeral of our stepdad. We told her that she should visit whenever she found time. She loves reading about the Amish and was overjoyed to go and visit Lancaster. We stopped in a local shop that wasn't swarmed with tourists and scored a gorgeous old trunk. I snatched a photo to document the older amish gent that helped ted load it into our car. October also was especially exciting because I started culinary school at the Art Institute and I'm loving it. (I've been working on posts for a new blog that I plan to day-view in the future of all that I'm learning and all my time in the kitchen lately.)

Birthdays. Birthdays. Birthdays. November is always fun packed with celebrations. We tend to go a bit over board since we share the same birthday along with one of Ted's besties and his mom. We went away into the mountains for some special ( alone time ). We hiked to a waterfall. We talked by a fire.

Need I remind you, my little brother visited us for a whole 10 days in December. This was by far the highlight of the month. A great way to end the year as well. This was a picture taken on Christmas day when we visited Ted at the Coast Guard. We had lunch and it was surprisingly pretty good. The rest of the day we wandering around then made it to a movie.

End.

12.30.2010
The past week flew by.
Christmas came with wonderful bonding time with my lil brother.
Presents. Food. Food. And more Food.
Hello, 2011 and resolutions (spinning class).
Need I remind myself that I didn't stop eating the whole time he was here
and will be in bathing suit soaking up the sun in a few short weeks.
all was wonderful, beautiful, and yummy!!!
Today broke a cycle of perfect days.
Brother left.
car was towed.
Driver's license in brother's wallet not mine.
Drive's license lost in the airport and no retrieval (long story)
car impound refusing to give me my car due to no license
$267, 10 hours, and one gracious person later
my car is back. What a day. a weird way to end a year that has been odd in itself.
Bring it 2011... I'm ready (I think)

1 Week Away

12.18.2010
Studying. Studying. Studying.

Last week, I had part of my finals - all were production. No stress involved.

This week is all written exams. I had one last night and another tonight. I'm so ready for it to be over. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to grades and having things just so. It's quite my frustration because I stress.

I totally OVER studied for the final last night and it was super easy which I prepared for it to be hard.

I'm not expecting the final tonight to be horrible but I just can't wait to come home drink a glass of wine, watch a movie, and relax!!

Christmas is only a week away, can you believe it?

I mailed off all our presents to our families today. Now, it looks like we have no presents.

Happy weekend.

Silver & Gold

12.15.2010

Silver and Gold.
Carmel apples.
Candle lit table scape.

Parties are so fun for any reason.
Around the holidays, there is SO much food.
I love the simplicity of the apples with carmel and the popcorn.
I really can't believe Christmas is peeking just around the corner.

Everything light touches

12.13.2010

A little sneak peak of our recent holiday photo session. It was blistering cold out and my eyes were watering continuously but at least a few came out ok. Ted and I spent yesterday with two of our friends in Manhattan. It was a little wet but we managed to enjoy it.

Carmen at Life Blesson's featured my testimony today. Head over and read what God's done in my life. I still have a sense of awe and wonder about the grace that continues to meet me.

I read this today and love it! "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine" Isaiah 43:1

Fill in the blank Friday

12.10.2010

1.   I wish  I was staying home with my husband all day snuggling and watching movies. I wish we would get a large real Christmas tree.

2.  Yesterday I  made more Christmas decorations with Ted and picked up red tape that was all around the house from the day before's costume making. (Ted was a candy cane.)

3.  Today I will  Go to work for a few hours and then off to class for my practical.

4.  Tomorrow I will   continue my online search for a new bathing suit and resort wear for our upcoming trip to Puerto Rico. Will finish our projects from Thursday and mentally prepare myself for a cold Sunday walking around New York with friends.

5.  Maybe  we will still get a real Christmas tree even though we decided to buy my little brother a plane ticket to come visit with the money. Still, I'm holding out for that smell at the least. Now, don't worry we have three small trees around with tons of other decorations.

6.  Someday   we will have a tribe of little munchkin's and then we will never go without a Christmas tree and endless Christmas-y activities. Kids and holidays are so much more magical. (And a tribe, really? Ok, maybe not. A few, yes.

7.  I love  that i work less than 20 hours a week and get home in time to watch Nate Berkus. I love that my husband wakes up with me when I have to go to work and he doesn't ( he's makes better coffee than I do ).  I love the holidays but have a disdain for the cold. I love layering my clothes so that I stay warm on my walk to work. I love reading a good book, snuggling when it rains, staying up watching movies, staying home, candle light dinner parties...

Confessions

12.06.2010
Confessions of a sister-in-law

1. I went from having boys constantly surrounding me to marrying into a family of girls. (Ted has three sisters)

2. Because we don't live close, I feel as if I can't completely be apart of your lives.

3. Girls are so much more work than boys!

4. I didn't have my sister-n-law's in my wedding.

5. I have a total of four sister-n-laws and probably five one day.

6. I understand how it feels to be replaced by your brother's wife. I know Ted's sisters have to feel this too.

7. Sister-n-law's are for fun shopping excursions during holiday get-togethers right?

8. Three of my four sister-n-law's are now first time mommies this year.

9. All their babies are hurting my Christmas budget.

10. We couldn't choose between babies first christmas so we are spending Christmas in Philadelphia. (Ok, this is half true. Ted couldn't take enough time off during Christmas for us to leave. Ends up every girl he works with is having a baby this month. But, it would have been a tough decision of who to spend Christmas with.)

12.05.2010

Countdowns start now

12.05.2010
We have three things that are super exciting and a countdown just sounded right.

here goes...

15 days till my little brother comes to visit

20 days till Christmas

43 days till Ted n I are sipping mojito's in Puerto Rico

Fill in the blank Friday

1.   Holiday spirit  is a must. I do admit there were a few Christmases that I was a grinch. The last few years I've really had a jolly holiday spirit and I intend to stay that way.

2.  The holidays are incomplete without  family and friends, christmas jingles, at least one christmas themed movie, pajamas, and warm drinks.

3.  My favorite things to do around the holidays is  in New Orleans my favorite thing to do was go to City Park for Christmas in the Oaks. Besides that I love decorating and being with the people I love.

4.  A holiday tradition my family and I have is   buying new pajamas to wear when we watch a Christmas movie. (I can't believe I missed this one when I was compiling our family christmas traditions.)

5.  Holiday music is    something that should be heard about Thanksgiving, while decorating, baking, wrapping presents, cleaning, or in the car during Christmas time. But, let's not skip over Thanksgiving.

6.  This year, I'll be spending the holidays   in Philadelphia with Ted and hopefully my little brother.

7.  Holiday wish list  on both sides of our extended family we draw names to buy presents for Christmas. When I sent my list to both sides I couldn't think of that great of stuff to put on my list. Ever since I turned it in I've thought of a jillion things I could have added. I'd list: iphone, sewing machine, a north face warm jacket, a anthropologie apron, to list a few...

Family Christmas Traditions

On sunday afternoon, I sat around with some people and we talked all about our family traditions. Everyone in the room happened to be married and we continued to talk about new traditions we are making with our little families. This is our second Christmas as a married couple and our first not living in close proximity of family. For the last several years, Ted and I have flip-flopped holidays with our sides of the family. This year we are staying home and celebrating solo.

Ted and I have started a few things that I'd love to become the 'norm' for our little family.

  • Decorating the house and tree as a family with drinks and cheery holiday music.
  • Making homemade presents for one another.
  • Giving presents to needy families.
  • Reading through the Christmas story, advent, or other literature.
  • Christmas movies with warm drinks and sweet treats.
  • A big Christmas breakfast.
  • Sending out Christmas cards or Christmas Cd's.

Hoping to keep adding to the list of traditions as the years pass and our family grows.

What are your family traditions?

ALSO, love this giveaway at 6th Street. Minted has a great selection of Christmas cards.

It was Saintsgiving

11.26.2010
We woke up to the first little flurries of the season.
We threw on clothes to make it for a few floats at the parade.
We saw Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Showered and dressed up we headed to a fancy schmancy restaurant. It wasn't a homemade Thanksgiving meal. But, it was probably the best we've ever had. Ted order the traditional Turkey dinner and I had the burgandy braised short ribs. Started with a fennel salad and the best turkey stock soup with little yummy meatballs and tortellini. Finished with a classic yummy pumpkin pie.

The rest of the day was relaxing and then ended up watching a bit of the Saints vs. Cowboys game. Ted is from Dallas and so naturally he's a pretty huge Cowboys fan. Me, I'm a Saints fan.
The house couldn't have been more divided.
At the end of the day, I was extremely happy. Ted was happy that the Cowboys ended up putting some points on the bored.

Now, on to Christmas decorations and some homemade hot cocoa.

8 THINGS I SAY 'THANK YOU' FOR

11.23.2010
The beginning of new things.
I'm on the brink of finishing my first quarter at culinary school. Exciting, it is. Ted schedule changing and taking a another position to help save for some upcoming vacations. Let's just say, we've been busy. All the new things have really been great and embraced.

Precious moments of everyday life with my husband.
I feel like in the last few months we have grown so much. It's not like we weren't close or anything of that sort before but I feel like I keep falling head-over-heels all over again. Each day keeps getting sweeter. Couldn't be more thankful for my wonderfully stellar husband.

The grace of God that meets me everyday.
For the last year, my life has been flipped upside down. Lots of changes with moving and relocating for Ted's job. I've seen God carry me through it all. His grace is ever present. The gospel speaks to me daily. It's inspiring and wonderfully humbling.

New friends.
We've met so many great people since our move to Philadelphia. Since I've moved several times in my life sometimes the process of starting new friendships doesn't appeal to me. But, we've met so many people that it's been so easy and fun getting to know them. Also, it's been a blessing to revisit old friends I grew up with when I lived in the Northeast.

Flowers. Hints of lavender. Candles.
Every season, I'm in love with flowers. They smear a smile on my face when I glance at them. I've tucked lavender around the house in little jars and in some mason jars. I love the smell. I've had a little obsession lately with white candles. They have found there way all around my home. I love how they flicker in the dark.

The frequent phone conversations with my mother.
My mom and I had many rough patches in high school but I've really begun to appreciate her. We talk on the phone almost every day. I'm so glad to have a Godly mom and someone to talk to.

Skype dates with my little brother.
Sometimes I just wish I could go back in time and live in my parents house for the pure fact of hanging with my little brother. While I was in high school, my brother was a little annoying pest to me. So I thought. I regret being mean and not cherishing those moments. Of course, I loved him then. But, I was so wrapped up in teenage life (as most high schoolers are). Now, I love talking to him. Skype makes that easily accessible. He's brilliant and loves cooking as much as I do.

Frequent day-weekend trips.
I'm the type of person I need a break from my surroundings. Ted, too. I so love getting away even if its for a day and seeing something new. The mundane really pays a toll on my well-being. Living in Philadelphia, I feel like we have an unending list of places we'd like to go for little one day or weekend trips. I love it. Also, I'm really exciting to be planning our future vacations (beach trip in the winter and Europe in the spring).

Cheers to Holiday Madness!

11.21.2010

This morning I woke up to a wonderfully odd thought.

Where are my christmas decorations?

I happened to know where they are with the boxes we are storing but where in the midst of boxes is the question. The wheels are turning and this made me happy. I have started on a few holiday crafty decor ideas. And, I'm real excited that Ted and I are taking photo's next weekend for pictures sake and to mail out Christmas cards.

Every year I try to send a little something out to people I care about. I've made little homemade books, mix cd's, and homemade photo cards. This year we are going all out and getting legit christmas cards.

I've searched a few sites in hopes of finding the perfect card that will host our holiday picture. I came across this promotion while reading Life Blessons. This settles it. I can find a card on Shutterfly especially with this special promotion for bloggers. They have several different looks that are easy to personalized to suite your fancy. Once I get back our pictures for our photo shoot I'll really be able to pick a card to send my love to family and friends.
